SEDUCTION Is an 8 page comic book that accompanied the NY state End Child Trafficking bill and explains how New York State law protects human traffickers. SEDUCTION illustrates how traffickers consciously trigger a bond of romance with their victims in order to control and exploit them. But when NY state law requires a child prove that they were coerced into working for the trafficker, it is difficult to show force or coersion when a child must convince the court that being manipulated by romance is how their trafficker coerced them.
SEDUCTION tells the story of Kisha whose father has left and whose mother is numbing her despair with alchohol. When Kisha feels like there is no one that cares about her, she recieves a text from Bane, a man she's met at the mall. Bane and Kisha start seeing each other and as soon as Kisha falls in love with Bane, he asks her to help him raise the money that he says he owes a dangerous man. Bane advertises Kisha online and then gives her some drugs that will make it easier for her to be abused by the man who's bought her online. Soon Kisha is addicted to drugs, hits bottom, and is rushed to the hospital after she collapses on the street. Bane is arrested. At the trial, Kisha testifies against Bane, but Bane never threatened her or used violence. Kisha cannot prove to the court that she was coerced into working for Bane and the charges against him are dropped.
This comic book was created for NY state legislators as they considered a new child trafficking bill that will drop the coercion requirement. It was distributed to the State Assembly, the codes committee and is being used in numerous lobbying efforts. It was created with the help of human trafficking survivors, FBI specialists as well as other experts of human trafficking.
