How to Throw an Abolitionista! Party
Make a Plan. Start daydreaming about your fantasy event...where will it take place? (School, ymca, scouts, church). What will you need? (Comic books, snacks, a speaker, etc...) What will it look like? How much will it cost for snacks? Comic books ($10/copy for 30 people)? Speaker fee?
Talk about it. Once you’ve figured out what your event will look like and what you’ll need, then find people who will help you make it happen. And here’s how to do that: talk about it! And this is where the fun begins...there’s a way to talk about a project that can get people so excited that they’ll immediately want to help you. It’s short and it has an easy-to-follow recipe that goes like this: 1)tell them what your project is, 2)tell them what the problem is, and 3) tell them how the project solves problem. Once you learn this formula, you’ll be using it for the rest of your life to get people excited about the things you’re doing. In our case, here’s what the pitch might sound like: “Hey Ms. Brown, let me tell you about what I’m up to! I’m creating an ABOLITIONISTA! workshop to educate my class at school about human trafficking. The FBI estimates that there are between 100,000-300,000 American young people trafficked into the sex industry every year and the average age is 12. Our goal with the workshop is to make our community a safer place by empowering my classmates to protect themselves.”
Then you ask the person if they’d like to help you by 1) helping you organize it, 2) helping raise money for it (birthday party--instead of gifts ask for donations, car washes, bake sales, dance concerts). “Would you like to help out by helping me with a fundraiser?” If they don’t want to help...that’s okay. There will be plenty of people who want to help you...just keep asking.
Practice the Pitch. Tell everyone you know, and everyone you meet about your project. Family, friends, teachers, neighbors, teammates, members of clubs you belong to, your parent’s friends. Go through your email and cell phone address book and group everyone you know into the groups: family, school friends, teachers, etc. Tell everyone you know...start by telling at least 10 people a day.
Make a Schedule. Once you’ve found people to help you, create a schedule for all the things you need to do: fundraising, securing the venue, ordering the comic books, finding a guest speaker. Then assign everyone the job they want to do, and...get to work!
You will have more fun then you ever imagined, and you will feel an incredible thrill of making a difference in your community. That’s what it means to be an Abolitionista!
